Best eSIM for Europe (2026)

One trip, several countries: Paris for a few days, then Rome, or a flight down to Barcelona and a ferry out to the Greek islands. A regional Europe eSIM is built for exactly that — one plan that keeps working as you cross borders, from $4.50.

Since Brexit, most UK networks charge a daily fee to roam in Europe — £2 to £2.75 a day, every day you use your phone. A Europe eSIM replaces that drip of daily charges with one fixed price for the whole trip. We compared the two providers worth considering below.

The short answer

Best eSIM for Europe: Roafly — 10GB for $19.90, valid 30 days, one eSIM covering 33 countries including Switzerland and the UK, hotspot included. Two honest exceptions: on O2, EU roaming is already included free (up to 25GB), and if you are travelling from Ireland on an Irish SIM, EU roaming is free by law — in both cases you may not need this page at all.

One plan covers all 33 countries for the life of the plan — the same data pot in every country, no per-country resets. Dingo takes the other approach: a separate country plan per stop, bought inside its app, which can work out fine for a two-country trip but means managing (and paying for) a plan per country on a longer tour.

How a Europe regional eSIM works

A regional eSIM is a single data plan that is authorised on local networks across a whole region. Install it once, before you fly. Land in Paris and it connects to a French network; take the train to Brussels or a flight to Rome and it reconnects locally there — same plan, same remaining data, nothing to swap. Roafly's Europe plan is multi-network within countries too, so the eSIM can pick from more than one local carrier where supported.

The 33 countries on Roafly's plan: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Two things worth noticing in that list. Switzerland is included, even though it sits outside the EU's free-roaming area — handy for ski trips and Alpine rail journeys. And the UK is included, which makes the same plan useful for a stopover in London at either end of the trip.

Best eSIM for Europe by traveller type

Best overall — Roafly 10GB / 30 days ($19.90)

The default for a one-to-three-week multi-country trip: enough data for maps, bookings and social media across several countries, at under $2 per GB.

Best cheap option — Roafly 1GB / 7 days ($4.50)

A long weekend in one or two cities, mostly on hotel Wi-Fi. Cheaper than two days of EE or Vodafone roaming charges — and it covers the whole week.

Best for a grand tour — Roafly 20GB / 30 days ($29.90)

Interrailing, a month of city-hopping, or hotspotting for two: 20GB at $1.49 per GB is Roafly's best-value 30-day Europe tier.

Best for a long trip — Roafly 50GB / 180 days ($54.90)

A season in Europe — working abroad, a long rental, a slow tour. Six months of validity means one purchase instead of a plan per month.

Best if you also need to make real calls — Dingo

Dingo's eSIM data is data-only like the rest, but its app bundles a pay-as-you-go internet calling balance, so you can ring hotels, landlines and non-WhatsApp numbers without a second app. Its European coverage is sold as country plans in the app — check the price for each of your stops before deciding.

Coverage and speed in Europe — honestly

Roafly's Europe eSIM is multi-network: in most countries it can use more than one local carrier (for example Orange and Movistar in Spain, KPN in the Netherlands, Orange and SFR in France), which is a real advantage over single-network plans when one carrier is weak where you are staying. Expect 4G/LTE everywhere tourists go and 5G in the major cities. Roafly states full speeds with no daily limits on its fixed plans.

Santorini, in the Greek islands — island coverage is strong in the towns and resorts; ferries between islands are the usual dead zone, on every network.

The honest caveats:

Neither provider asks for ID verification or a passport scan to buy — one less queue than the airport SIM desk.

What about just roaming? UK charges in Europe, and the Ireland angle

If you are on a UK network, your European roaming options in 2026 look like this (checked October 2026, from the networks' published prices):

NetworkDaily charge in EuropeA week in SpainRoaming data cap
EE£2.72/day, or a 7-day pass for £16.50£16.5050GB
O2Included — no daily charge£025GB
Three£2/day (passes from £5 for 3 days)£1212GB
Vodafone£2.75/day (passes from £16 for 8 days)£1625GB
Sky Mobile£2/day£1425GB

The fair-use catch: "included" or daily-fee roaming still comes out of a capped pot. O2 stops your data at 25GB until you buy a Bolt On; Three's cap is just 12GB; EE allows 50GB, then charges per GB. Heavy streamers can hit those caps on a fortnight's trip — an eSIM plan has no equivalent cliff edge, just the data you bought. Networks also limit how long you can roam continuously (typically around two months in any four) before surcharges apply.

Travelling from Ireland? Then most of this page is a nice-to-have rather than a necessity: Irish SIMs roam free across the EU and EEA under EU roam-like-home rules, subject to fair-use limits. A Europe eSIM still earns its keep for you in three situations — trips that include Switzerland (outside EU roam-free), very heavy data use beyond your fair-use limit, and keeping a second line for a tablet or a travelling companion. For a straightforward Irish trip around the EU, your own SIM is already the right answer, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a plan.

How much data do you actually need?

Rough real-world usage, per hour of active use:

As a rule of thumb for a European trip:

When in doubt, size up one tier — on Roafly, the step from 5GB to 10GB is $7.00, and unused data costs less than a mid-trip top-up scramble.

How to install your Europe eSIM

Do this at home on Wi-Fi, before you fly. It takes about five minutes.

  1. Check your phone. Dial *#06# — if you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
  2. Buy your plan. Pick your data amount and pay online; your QR code arrives by email within minutes.
  3. Install it. iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM → scan the QR code. Android: Settings → Network / Connections → SIMs → Add eSIM → scan. The Europe plan sits alongside your normal SIM — nothing gets removed.
  4. When you land, switch the Europe eSIM line on, turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line, and set it as your data line. Roaming on the eSIM line is included in the plan price — there are no extra charges, in any covered country.
  5. Keep your home SIM switched on for calls, texts, WhatsApp and bank security codes. Only your data routes through the eSIM.

Your plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered country — not when you buy or install it. Installing early costs you nothing.

Europe eSIM FAQs

What is the best eSIM for Europe?

For most multi-country trips, Roafly's Europe plan: one eSIM covering 33 countries, 10GB valid 30 days for $19.90 (checked October 2026). If you are only visiting one country, a country plan is usually cheaper per GB — ourdestination guides cover those. And if you are on O2, or travelling from Ireland, EU roaming may already be free for you.

Does one eSIM work in multiple European countries?

Yes. A regional Europe eSIM works across every country it covers — cross a border and the same plan keeps working on a local network. No swapping, no new purchase at each stop.

Does a Europe eSIM work in the UK and Switzerland?

Roafly's does — both are in its 33-country list, which matters because Switzerland sits outside the EU's free-roaming rules. Always check the covered-country list on the exact plan before you buy; lists differ between providers.

Is roaming in Europe free on UK networks?

Only on O2, which includes EU roaming at no extra charge up to 25GB. EE charges £2.72 a day (or £16.50 for a 7-day pass), Three £2 a day, Vodafone £2.75 a day and Sky £2 a day — see our roaming guides for the network-by-network detail. Travelling from Ireland on an Irish SIM, EU roaming is included free by law.

How much data do I need for two weeks in Europe?

For most people, 10GB covers a fortnight of maps, messaging, social media and the odd video call. Light users on hotel Wi-Fi manage on 3–5GB; hotspotting or daily video calls points to 20GB.

Does a Europe eSIM include a phone number?

No. Roafly's Europe plan is data-only — no European number, no SMS. Calls go over WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger; keep your home SIM active for texts and bank codes. Dingo's app also sells a pay-as-you-go calling balance if you need to ring ordinary numbers.

The verdict

For a UK traveller visiting more than one European country, Roafly's 10GB Europe plan at $19.90 is the one to buy: it undercuts a week of daily roaming charges on EE, Three, Vodafone or Sky, works across 33 countries including Switzerland, and the hotspot is included. On O2, or travelling from Ireland, check your free roaming first — you may genuinely not need it. Pick Dingo instead if you want a calling balance in the same app as your data, and price its per-country plans for your route in the app before you commit.
