Best eSIM for International Travel (2026)

Some trips do not fit in one country. A work trip that hops from London to New York to Singapore, a honeymoon split between Thailand and Japan, a gap-year route through four continents. For trips like those, the question is not which country's eSIM to buy — it is which shape of plan to buy.

There are three shapes: country plans, regional plans and global plans. Each wins in a different situation, and picking the wrong one is the easiest way to overpay. This page prices all three honestly, using the two providers this site follows.

The short answer

Buy the narrowest plan that covers your whole route. One country: a country plan (from $3.90). One region: a regional plan (Roafly Europe 10GB, $19.90). Several regions: Roafly Global — 10GB for $54.90 across 117 countries, or stack the regional and country plans for each leg if you want the lowest price per GB and do not mind managing two or three eSIMs.

The pattern never changes: the wider the coverage, the more you pay per gigabyte. A global plan is not a rip-off — you are paying for one plan, one install and zero admin across every border — but on a long trip the per-GB gap compounds. The worked example below shows where the crossover sits.

5GB30 days$34.90$6.98

All Roafly Global plans are data-only, hotspot is allowed from your allowance, no ID verification is required, and validity starts when the eSIM first connects in a covered country. Dingo sells country plans inside its app rather than a single global plan — for a multi-region trip that means one plan per country, managed in one app.

When each shape wins

One country, or one clear base — country plans win

If 90% of your trip is in one place, buy that country's plan and ignore the rest. They are the cheapest data on this page by a wide margin: 10GB inThailand is $10.00, inTurkey $12.00, in theUSA $16.90. A day trip over a border rarely justifies upgrading the whole trip to a regional or global plan — hotel Wi-Fi and an offline map will carry a day.

Several countries, one region — regional plans win

A fortnight moving through France, Spain and Italy is what regional plans exist for: one install, one data pot, local networks in each country. Roafly'sEurope plan (33 countries, 10GB for $19.90) is the one we have priced in full; the same logic applies to any single-region trip.

Several regions, one trip — global plans win on simplicity

New York, then Tokyo, then Sydney: no single regional plan covers that, and stacking three country plans means three installs and three sets of validity dates to track. One global plan just works at every stop. You pay for the convenience in the per-GB price — on a short, light-data business trip, that trade is obviously worth it.

The stack: global money-saving, regional effort

The cheapest way to cover a multi-region trip is to stack: a regional or country plan for each leg. Worked example, a three-week trip through Turkey then the USA, using about 10GB in each: two country plans cost $12.00 + $16.90 = $28.90. The same 20GB on Roafly Global is $89.90. The saving is real; the cost is admin — two installs, and each plan's validity starts when you land in its country, so buy each one just before its leg. Most phones happily hold several eSIM profiles at once.

The calling question: where Dingo is genuinely different

Every plan on this page — Roafly's country, regional and global plans alike — isdata-only. No phone number, no SMS, no ordinary voice calls. For most travellers that is fine: WhatsApp, FaceTime and Messenger calls run on the data connection, and your home SIM stays in the phone for texts and bank codes.

Dingo is built differently. Alongside its in-app eSIM data plans, Dingo sells a pay-as-you-go calling balance in the same app, which rings ordinary landline and mobile numbers worldwide at per-minute rates. If your trip involves calling hotels, airlines, a landlord, or family members who are not on WhatsApp, that is a real functional difference, not a marketing one — and it is the main reason to choose Dingo over Roafly for a complicated trip. Its data plans are sold per country inside the app, so check each stop's price there before you commit.

Coverage and compatibility — honestly

How much data do you actually need?

How to install a travel eSIM

Do this at home on Wi-Fi, before you fly. It takes about five minutes per plan.

  1. Check your phone. Dial *#06# — if you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
  2. Buy your plan (or plans). Pick your shape and data amount and pay online; QR codes arrive by email within minutes.
  3. Install it. iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM → scan the QR code. Android: Settings → Network / Connections → SIMs → Add eSIM → scan. Label each eSIM by its region or country if you are stacking — future-you, tired at an airport, will be grateful.
  4. When you land, switch that destination's eSIM line on, turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line, and set it as your data line. Roaming on the eSIM line is included in the plan price.
  5. Keep your home SIM switched on for calls, texts, WhatsApp and bank security codes. Only your data routes through the eSIM.

eSIM vs roaming on a multi-region trip

Roaming charges multiply across a multi-region trip because every region prices separately. On EE, a day in Europe costs £2.72, but a day in the USA or Turkey costs £6 — and EE's own published bands run to £16 a day in its priciest zones. A two-week trip split between Europe and the USA on EE passes and daily charges lands roughly between £40 and £85 before fair-use caps enter the picture. The same trip's data on a global or stacked eSIM is a fixed $28.90–$89.90, known before you leave home. See ourroaming guides for the per-network detail.

International travel eSIM FAQs

What is the best eSIM for international travel?

It depends on the shape of the trip. One region: a regional plan (Roafly Europe, 10GB for $19.90). One country: a country plan (from $3.90). Several regions: Roafly Global covers 117 countries from $9.90, with 10GB for $54.90 — simple, but pricier per GB than stacking regional and country plans. All prices checked October 2026.

Global vs regional vs country eSIM — which is better?

Country plans are cheapest per GB but work in one country. Regional plans cost a little more per GB and cover a whole region. Global plans cover 100+ countries in one plan at the highest per-GB price — $5.49/GB for Roafly Global 10GB, against $1.20/GB for a Turkey country plan. Buy the narrowest plan that covers your whole route.

Does a global eSIM work in every country?

No. Roafly's Global plan covers 117 countries — most of the travel map, not all of it. Check every stop on your itinerary against the plan's covered-country list before you buy.

Can I make phone calls on a travel eSIM?

Travel eSIMs are data-only: no number, no SMS. Calls go over WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger on the data connection. Dingo's app also sells a pay-as-you-go calling balance that can ring ordinary landline and mobile numbers — the one real exception in approach.

How much data do I need for a multi-country trip?

Budget roughly 0.5–1GB per travel day for maps, messaging, bookings and social media, and more if you hotspot or video-call daily. A three-week multi-region trip typically lands between 10GB and 20GB in total.

Can I top up a global eSIM if I run out of data?

Roafly offers top-ups on its plans, and most modern phones hold several eSIM profiles, so you can always install another plan alongside. Buying a country plan for the leg you are on is often cheaper than topping up a global plan.

The verdict

There is no single best eSIM for international travel — there is a bestshape for your trip. Match the plan to the route: country plans for one base, Roafly Europe for a regional tour, Roafly Global (10GB, $54.90) when the route spans regions and simplicity matters, and a stack of country plans when it spans regions and price matters more. Choose Dingo when being able to ring ordinary phone numbers from the same app is worth more than the cheapest data.
