O2 Roaming Charges (2026)

O2 is the exception among the big UK networks: it never brought back European roaming charges. If you are on O2 and heading to Spain, France or Greece, your phone simply works, free. The charges on this network live elsewhere — outside Europe, and past one fair-use limit — and that is where this page concentrates.
On O2, roaming in the Europe Zone (48 destinations) is included at no extra charge on pay monthly and pay as you go, with data capped at25GB a month. Outside Europe — Turkey, the USA, Thailand and most of the world — it is around £7 a day via O2 Travel, unless your plan bundles O2 Travel Inclusive.

The Europe Zone: O2's big differentiator
Every other big UK network reintroduced European daily charges after Brexit — EE charges £2.72 a day, Vodafone £2.75, Three and Sky £2. O2 held out, and still includes roaming across its 48-destination Europe Zone in the standard tariff, for pay-monthly and pay-as-you-go customers alike. A week in Spain costs an O2 customer nothing extra; the same week costs £12–£19 on the other big networks. It is, straightforwardly, the best roaming deal on a UK high-street network, and the main reason frequent European travellers choose O2.
The zone is wider than the EU: it includes Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and the Channel Islands alongside the member states, plus Ireland. Northern Cyprus is the notable exclusion — the Republic of Cyprus is in, the north is out, and your rate can change mid-island.
The one catch: 25GB, and the 63-day rule
- 25GB data cap. However big your UK allowance is, roaming data in the Europe Zone stops at 25GB per billing month (or your full allowance, if that is smaller). Past the cap, data stops — there is no per-GB drip; you buy a data Bolt On or wait for your month to reset. For most holiday use 25GB is ample; for a fortnight of hotspotting and HD streaming, it is a real ceiling.
- 63 days in four months. O2's fair-use policy expects you to spend more time in the UK than abroad: roam for more than 63 days in any 4-month period and surcharges can apply. Holidays are fine; living abroad on a UK O2 SIM is not what the deal is for.
- The spend-cap quirk. A £0 spend cap on O2 blocks out-of-bundle charges but not Bolt Ons you opt into — so it will not stop an O2 Travel charge you have agreed to. It is not the safety net it is on some other networks.
Outside Europe: O2 Travel and Travel Inclusive
Beyond the Europe Zone, O2's default is the O2 Travel Bolt On at around £7 a day for data, calls and texts in most of the world — Turkey, the USA and Thailand all sit at that rate. It is simpler than EE's zoned pricing, but it is not cheap: a week is £49, a fortnight £98.
The exception is O2 Travel Inclusive, bundled with certain Volt, Plus and Ultimate plans. It folds a set of non-European destinations — including the USA — into your allowance at no daily charge, and the Ultimate tier widens the list further (75 destinations, including Turkey and Thailand). If you travel long-haul often, an O2 plan with Travel Inclusive can be worth more than a cheaper tariff without it — but check your own plan in the My O2 app or O2's travel checker before assuming either way, because the daily charge applies the moment you use the phone in a destination your plan does not cover.
How to avoid O2 roaming charges
- In Europe: mostly, do nothing. Roaming is included. Just watch the 25GB cap if you stream or hotspot heavily — hotel Wi-Fi for the big downloads keeps you comfortably under it.
- Outside Europe: compare before you fly. A week of O2 Travel in Thailand is about £49; a Thailand eSIM with 10GB costs $10.00 for the whole trip. In the USA it is £49 against a $16.90 eSIM; in Turkey, £49 against $12.00. Keep your O2 line on for calls and texts, switch O2 data roaming off, and let the eSIM carry the data.
- Check for Travel Inclusive first. If your plan already bundles your destination, the eSIM comparison is moot — use what you are paying for.
- Do not rely on a spend cap. On O2 it does not block Bolt Ons. The reliable off-switch for charges is data roaming itself: off means no data charge can start.
- Mind the map edges. Northern Cyprus, cruise ships and border areas near non-zone countries can all pull your phone onto a chargeable network. Manual network selection avoids the surprise.
O2 roaming FAQs
Is O2 roaming free in Europe?
Yes — O2 is the only one of the big UK networks that still includes Europe Zone roaming at no extra charge, on pay monthly and pay as you go alike. Data is capped at 25GB a month; minutes and texts work as at home. Compare the other networks on our EE roaming page and theroaming hub.
What is O2's Europe roaming data limit?
25GB per billing month, or your full UK allowance if that is smaller. Past the limit, data stops until you buy a data Bolt On or the month resets.
How much does O2 charge for roaming in Turkey and the USA?
Around £7 a day via O2 Travel in both — £49 for a week. Unless your plan bundles O2 Travel Inclusive: that covers the USA on Volt and Plus plans, and Turkey too on Ultimate plans.
Does O2 charge for roaming in Ireland?
No. Ireland is inside the Europe Zone, so it is included like the rest of the zone, subject to the same 25GB data cap.
How do I avoid O2 roaming charges?
In Europe you largely do not have to — it is included. Outside Europe, run data through a travel eSIM and keep O2 data roaming off; ourdestination guides price the comparison country by country.
